by Dr. Joseph Eplett – Keep the Pressure off Your Nerves and Enjoy a Healthy Life!

On November 13,1966, I nearly died.  I was riding my motorcycle home from class at my first semester of chiropractic college when I was rear ended by a 1959 Chevrolet driven by a drunk.  He hit me so hard that I was propelled through the air across four lanes of traffic, crushing one vertibra   in my neck and one in my lower back.  I was taken to the Emergency room, where they stitched and dressed my lacerations.  I was in a coma and given last rites.  Much to everybody’s surprise, ten days later I came out of the coma a quadriplegic.   After many tests and opinions, I was told that I would never walk or use my arms again.  My brain was working fine but the 13,000,000 electronic signals per minute sent out by the brain, were not getting through to my arms and legs.  I was a healthy, 19 year old athlete at the time and I wasn’t about to spend the rest of my life a quadriplegic.  After being released from the hospital,  I started getting chiropractic adjustments and in two weeks, I was able to move my arms and legs.  My brain had been reconnected to my arms and legs through chiropractic care, restoring  the use of my arms and legs and various other parts of my body.  The cause of my paralysis was corrected, restoring the brain to body connection, allowing my muscles to function so that I could enjoy a healthy life.

Most of us have spinal misalignments (Vertebral subluxation complex-V.S.C.) which affect our bodies causing some degree of vertebraeparalysis. This paralysis can affect the entire body depending on the location, position and degree of misalignment of the V.S.C. The brain is the computer that runs the body through the nervous system. It signals all of our organs and internal systems to work giving us the ability to talk, hear, smell, see, move, taste think and feel. The brain is mostly contained within the skull. There are 13,000,000 messages or electronic signals a minute exit the brain through the brain stem to direct all bodily activities e.g. digestion, assimilation, elimination, circulation as well as immune system function and cell production.

The spine which houses the spinal cord, transmits the innate intelligence via the peripheral nervous system from the brain to the 50-70 trillion receptor cells in the body.  These cells don’t function if they are not getting the messages from the brain to tell them what to do. If they don’t function properly, they make abnormal cells which in turn makes abnormal tissues and organs. When the spine is not in its proper alignment, these messages do not all get from the brain to the body because there is pressure put on the nerves or the spinal cord. This pressure blocks the signals and causes any number of symptoms depending on the location and severity of the pressure on the nerve and 80% of the nerves can’t be felt. Through correct, gentle, spinal alignment, it is possible to remove this pressure from the nerves and restore optimum health to the whole body.

How do we become subluxated or mis-aligned? The answer is stress.  Stress comes in three forms i.e.: physical, mental and toxic.subluxationMost of us have physical stress in the birthing process and learning to walk, the average child falls 5,000 times. Then there’s learning to ride bicycles, falling out of trees, swings and other playground equipment. Television, computers, reading, writing and many other factors that cause us to have poor posture in our lives. Toxic stress comes from poor eating habits and being exposed to environmental toxins. Know what food is right for our body because we all have different nutritional requirements based on our own unique lifestyles. And of course, most of our lives are full of emotional stress which is a leading cause of subluxations.

The best tools for dealing with all types of stress are exercise, a good diet, a good attitude, meditation, proper rest and regular chiropractic adjustments to keep the spine in proper alignment. Regular chiropractic check ups, like brushing and flossing your teeth, are an important part of wellness care. When the brain stays connected to the body via the spinal cord and the peripheral nervous system with proper spinal alignment, everything should function properly and insure good health. Proper function of the immune system gives us the assurance that we can enjoy health. Dorland Medical Dictionary defines health as, “an optimal state of physical, mental and spiritual well-being, not merely the absence of sickness.” That is powerful! So keep the pressure off your nerves and enjoy a healthy life!
