Musical Movies

Watching movies is fun, right? Still, it can get a little tiresome watching the same old silly films over and over again. Why don't you try renting a few good musicals? With catchy songs and heart-felt stories, these movies are classics. Here are a few you should check out if you are ready to jump into a new, interesting world to explore something other than the same old box office hits and misses.

 

WESTSIDE STORY

In 1950's, two groups of teenagers are well-known enemies. When Maria, a leader's younger sister, and Tony, a member of the other gang meet at a school dance, it is love and first sight. Yet when their respective groups find out, the relationship is tested. This classic love story provides many twists and turns and a lie that gets out of hand ultimately leads to a main character's demise.

 

 

 

RENT

This movie that was recently out in theaters, explores the struggle for survival in the late 1980's and early 1990's. It tells the story of how a group of twenty something struggling artists who live day by day through the AIDS epidemic. Their non-traditional relationships, and immense hardships are heartfelt. The underlying messages are genuine, and the remarkable music and passionate characters are sure to touch you.

  

  

CHICAGO

In the carefree roaring nineteen twenties, fame-starved Roxie is hoping for a big break into stardom as a dancer at a club in Chicago. But when a man tells her he has connections that would make her a star instantly, she becomes eager and optimistic. But when he tells her he has been providing her with lies, she becomes enraged and shoots him. She is immediately sent to jail. Meanwhile, Roxie's idol, media darling Velma, has also been charged with murder. When the two meet on death row, they scheme up plans for their futures. Yet when the media eats up Roxie's story, Velma must fight back for her turn in the spotlight. This exciting and mysterious story combines the dark world of show business, and curiousness as two murderesses deal with their crimes.

 

 

HAIRSPRAY

This animated nineteen sixties comedy follows the amusing teenager Traci Turnblad (including her famous coiffed hair 'do) and her daily life. Though she is not the most popular at school, she is still hoping to be asked to the school dance. When she ends up on a dancing television show with may of her friends, things get crazy, and Traci doesn't know where to turn. With silly music and cheerful dances, this recent Broadway production is sure to make you laugh, and realize a little bit of Traci lies in all of us.
