the American Library Association has announced the awards for 2010. The two most well known awards are the Newbery Medal for "the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children" and the Caldecott Medal awarded to "the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children."Often, the results of these prestigious honors are well-known in literary and education circles, but can also be of great assistance to parents when guiding their kids toward reading selections. Here are this year's honorees:

Like A Maccabee - This middle-grade chapter book tells the story of Ben, a 10-year-old boy who is gearing up for a championship soccer game while adjusting to the changes in his family that have occurred since his grandfather moved in. Ben faces challenges at school, including the bully from the opposing soccer team, and frustrations at home.
