Children's Book Reviews

We all encourage our children to read. It can be challenging as kids become busy with other activities. Some parents find it especially difficult to find books for adolescent boys. Here are some book suggestions that will help keep your boys reading! I've purposely chosen well-known titles that will be easy to find in your school or local library.

DEAR MR. HENSHAW by Beverly Cleary is written as a serious of letters over several years, from young Leigh to Mr. Henshaw, his favorite author. Through the letters we learn about Leigh and his experiences and heartaches, from his lunch being stolen to the pain of an absent father. HOLES by Louis Sachar is part mystery, part adventure, and part fantasy. Ultimately, Holes is an illustration of the strength of the human spirit. Stanley Yelnats is sent to Camp Green Lake detention center for boys when he is falsely accused of stealing. Establishing relationships with the other boys proves challenging, but the greatest test is standing up to the evil warden.
THE OUTSIDERS by S.E. Hinton is a teen classic. Ponyboy the main character, experiences teenaged angst as a member of the "greasers." The impact of the social strata of teens, and society in general, is revealed when tragedy befalls Ponyboy's group.
THE GIVER by Lois Lowry will satisfy sci-fi fans, but is compelling enough to engage fantasy skeptics. Jonas is a 12-year-old boy in a "perfect" world, devoid of illness, sadness, and undesirable human emotion. When Jonas is chosen to be the "Receiver of Memory," he discovers the truth about the limits of his life and the potential beyond his world.

Happy Reading!
