Reviews of Children's Books

Summer fun often involves family travel. But many families don't have the time or the resources for trips to faraway places, but that shouldn't prevent kids from learning about other cultures from around the world. Go to your library and check out some children's books about other countries. You can choose just one, or a few places to "visit" during the summer months.

After reading up on a chosen locale, prepare a meal based on the cuisine of the country, create a themed art project, or try to learn a few words in the native tongue. Older kids can use the internet to research fun facts. The opportunities for activities that will interest your kids are endless. Your family will feel like they have traveled around the world without leaving the suburbs!

Here are some fun book ideas to get you started:

learn about FarnaceGetting to Know France and French by Nicola Wright, illustrated by Wooley is a book that introduces readers to the country of France. The illustrations are engaging and the text is fun, yet informative. Although it is geared for the younger set, kids and adults will enjoy learning from this book. It is part of the Getting to Know Series, which offers books about other England and Italy as well.

learn about japanColors of Japan by Holly Littlefield, illustrated by Helen Byers, is an example of an artistic introduction to a country. While you won't learn everything about Japan, this is a pleasing introduction that will pique reader's interest about Japan.

Children from Australia to Zimbabwe
is a beautiful photographic tribute to children across the world. In addition to the photos, there is information about each of the countries profiled. This is a terrific book for choosing a country your family might want to research further.

You don't need a passport to travel around the world. Spend an afternoon browsing through the books of foreign lands in the children's section of the library, and before you know it you'll be creating origami animals, or cooking up some delicious crepes with your kids. Bon Voyage!
