Children's Books: Keep Your Cool For Back-to-School

By Barbara Bietz

The lazy days of summer are coming to a close. Back-to-school activities can be stressful for the whole family. But it can be fun, too! If you need a respite from the chaos, take a few quiet moments to read. Here are some school themed choices to help get the family ready for school:

For both kids and moms who are getting ready for kindergarten, Go Home Mrs. Beekman! By Ann Redisch Stampler, illustrated by Marshs Gray Carrington, is sure to tickle a funny bone. Emily Beekman refuses to go to school until her mother promises to stay at school for "a million gazillion years." But Emily likes school - and Mrs. Beekman refuses to leave. After all, a promise is a promise! Depite Teacher Sue's pleas, Mrs. Beekman finds clever ways to sneak into the classroom. With vibrant illustrations and hilarious prose, Mrs. Beekman is sure to bring a smile. Teachers will also enjoy this selection as a perfect read aloud for the first day of school.

Never mind the three r's, most kids worry more about friendships than homework Worst Best Friend by Alexis O'Neill, illustrated by Laura Huliska-Beith, is the story of Mike and Conrad, two best, best friends. Until the new kid Victor becomes Conrad's new buddy. With fun, frolicking language, and bold illustrations, Worst Best Friend presents realistic schoolyard dynamics with humor and fun. A perfect companion to The Recess Queen, also by O'Neill and Huliska-Beith

Mrs. Dole Is Out Of Control is the first book in the My Weird School Daze Series by Dan Gutman. Emerging readers will love this fun chapter book about a PTA President who plans an overblown celebration for the third grade class. The whole series is great fun and kids will relate to the characters as well as the frolicking escapades.

Family life gets busy during the fall months. Amid homework and soccer games, don't forget to carve out some reading time. Reading is a great way to relax after a busy day!
