'Tween Books

Some adolescent readers adore perusing the bookshelves, while others can become easily frustrated and go home empty handed. It can be a challenge for parent to find books to recommend to middle school and high school kids. There are some terrific new books that just might appeal to your teen or tween. If a book seems like a good fit for your reader, bring it home!

The One Where the Kid Nearly Jumps to His Death and Lands in California (Razorbill) by Mary Hershey

At age eight, Alastair jumped from a ski lift and injured his leg so badly it had to be amputated. Now, at age 13, he begrudgingly goes California to visit his estranged father. Alastair is surprised to discover his dad's new wife is a double amputee. Alastair, also known as "Stump," befriends a teen TV star, who invites him to participate in an athletic charity event, which results in an Stump's unlikely friendship with a crusty swim coach. The unique storyline is warm, tender, and even humorous. With some unexpected twists and turns, the plot holds together nicely. Alastair's voice is authentic and believable. Readers will cheer him on as he rides the waves of love, loss, and the challenge of a lifetime.

The Swan Maiden by Heather Tomlinson (Henry Holt)

Doucette longs to be a Swan Maiden like her sisters, and despite her nobility, riches and opulent surroundings, she feels trapped. She wishes for magic, not chores. When she does find her own power, Doucette discovers it comes with complications. Though set in an old world fantasy, Doucette's sense of isolation and frustrated will be sure to evoke emotion in young readers. Doucette is a strong, well-rounded character. The imagery in The Swan Maiden is sublime, down to the finest details, as if this ethereal fairy tale were weaved with a golden thread.
