Beyond Wimpy Kids

By Barbara Bietz

Anyone familiar with the under twelve set is no doubt aware of The Diary of a Wimpy Kid series by Jeff Kinney. The most recent book in the series, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days just hit the shelves. Most fans pre-ordered the book while others lined-up to snag a copy at their local bookstores. The Wimpy Kid books are playful and fun, combining text with cartoon drawings that leave kids giggling.

My 10-year-old nephew Jake is a die-hard fan. Like many other young readers, he is so loyal to the series he isn't interested in reading other books. What's a book-loving aunt to do? I consulted a group of children's book specialists - authors, librarians, bloggers, and reviewers. With their help, I offer some great books to read until the next Wimpy book comes out!

Alcatraz Versus the Evil Librarians by Brandon Sanderson
Chasing Vermeer by Blue Balliett
Chet Gecko Series by Bruce Hale
Giggler Treatment by Roddy Doyle
Holes by Louis Sacher
Hugo Cabret is by Brian Selznick
The Invention of Hugo Cabret
