Go Green this Valentine's Day
by Ann Safford

February is the month of love, as Valentine's Day approaches. As sweet and touching as flowers and candy are, you don't need to have them in order to give a great gift. Think naturally, and ditch the pre-wrapped gifts that clog landfills. There are easy things you can do that your partner will enjoy, and are definitely more earth friendly!

Instead of going for the pre-wrapped chocolates, stop by your local candy store for some freshly made fudge. It satisfies the sweet tooth and while maybe not the healthiest meal, is better than eating the preservative laden chocolates found at the local mass-retailer.

Instead of driving to dinner and a movie and wasting gas, plan a night in. A romantic meal for two, a movie rental and a warm night under the covers is all you need to keep your interior fire burning.

Why not throw in a day at the spa for your favorite Valentine? Nothing can help you feel more natural and relaxed than a massage and a day of pampering. Get back to yourself!

There is always the ever-popular flowers that's a big hit with the ladies. Go through a local nursery that most likely does not use high amounts of pesticide on the plants. Better yet, buy a plant or tree that can be planted in the spring. Not only will they last longer and bring memories every year, but they are good for the earth as well.

Instead of buying a card this year, make your own. You can add your own quips and phrases for the ultimate personal touch. If you do decide to buy, try picking out cards on recycled paper.

Using a little creativity can be fun as you find ways to please your Valentine. Think natural and get back to the basics!
