Travel the World Without Leaving Home with the Edventure Project

What do you get when you mix four kids, nomadic parents, four bikes, two trailers, twelve panniers, one gigantic tent, and three continents? The Edventure Project, of course! It started with the seed of the desire to take some time off and take an extended trip with our children. It germinated into a year and a half journey by bicycle across three continents. It has grown into an incredible way to share our adventure with thousands of children across the world through the Worldwide Edventure Virtual Field Trip. We call it the Edventure Project because that's what it is - education and an adventure rolled into one!

What do we hope to accomplish? The adventure of a lifetime; for our children and for the families that join us along the way, both in person and through our Worldwide Edventure Virtual Field Trip. We hope to encourage families in accomplishing their dreams and living life adventurously. We hope to do our part to end global warming by reducing our carbon footprint and encouraging others to do the same. We hope to give our children, and the thousands of others who will come along on the Virtual Field Trip, a global vision allowing them to make international connections that will promote peace and understanding between cultures. We seek to increase geographical and cultural literacy in the next generation and to demonstrate that education and adventure can be combined to the highest standard.

Why?

The most asked question, the easiest to answer, the hardest to make other people understand the answer to: why? Why would we, home owners, parents of four children, members of a solid community, in our mid-thirties, with a six figure income, having worked "our whole lives" to get where we are, drop it like a hot rock? Why would we sell our house in its idyllic wooded setting, sell our cars and most of our worldly goods? Why would we put our children's educations on hold? Why would my husband give up his "good, solid, dependable job" in favor of homelessness and an uncertain career future? Why would we walk away from everything that makes so much sense to everyone we know into only God knows what, dragging our four precious children in tow? Why indeed.

Our easy answer: Because we have to. We've worked our "whole lives" to. It has been a slowly germinating seed of an idea in our souls from the day we took our first breaths. It is our destiny. That makes perfect sense to us. It is the next logical step in a long series of steps: meeting one another, joining our hearts and lives, building homes, selling homes, having babies, moving cross country, working up the career ladder, saving money, changing diapers, packing tiny babies on impossibly long trips by car, plane, boat, you name it. Placing our fourth baby's toes in the Atlantic, Pacific, and the far side of the Hawaiian Pacific before his sixth month began. Climbing pyramids on short trips to condition the kids and build endurance. Doing toothbrush drills at the kitchen sink to train them out of the habit of using potentially contaminated water. All baby steps toward an end.

We talk to so many families who hear about our travels and say something like, "Wow, that's so neat! I wish we could do that but we can't because..." pick a reason. Some have little babies, others are tied to jobs or other commitments, some have physical limitations, others are just being nice - they secretly think we're crazy and would never in a million years leave the country for points unknown. Now there is a way for all of you, those who'd love to go but can't and those who'd never go but are still interested, to travel along with us without ever leaving the comfort of your living room. "How?" you ask?

The Worldwide Edventure Virtual Field Trip. What is it? It is a subscription service, much like a magazine, only completely on line. The subscription consists of ten country packets (plus three freebies!) which are 30-35 pages in length. They feature geographical, cultural, and historical information about the country in question, stories about our travels through that country, pictures, and more. Each packet also includes a multi-level unit study about that country which includes art projects, recipes, language lessons, history, literature, geography, mapping, games, and more. There are activities in every section suitable for pre-schoolers, elementary-aged kids, high-schoolers, and even Mom & Dad; the whole family can get involved. In essence, it's a 300-350 page geography book throughout the subscription.

In addition to the packets to download for each country, your family can listen to podcasts featuring the sounds and stories of the people we meet and places we pass through. Your kids (or you parents!) can contact us as we travel and ask questions or suggest things to see along the way and help design our route. The first subscription is available for purchase now, through our web site, for only $25.00, if you use the coupon below.
