By Barbara Bietz --  Childrens' Books - Music plays an important role in our communities.

Parents can expose their kids through lessons, concerts, and listening to recordings. There are also wonderful books that introduce musical concepts and engage young readers. Many schools are cutting back on music programs. Even parents with limited knowledge about music can offer their children a wide range of musical experiences.

Zin, Zin, Zin a Violin by Lloyd moss and Marjorie Priceman is a rhythmic feast of musical sounds and instrumentation. The lyrics are evocative; “With mournful moan and silken tone. Itself alone comes one trombone.”

Like A Maccabee - This middle-grade chapter book tells the story of Ben, a 10-year-old boy who is gearing up for a championship soccer game while adjusting to the changes in his family that have occurred since his grandfather moved in. Ben faces challenges at school, including the bully from the opposing soccer team, and frustrations at home.

The rich illustrations have a sense of movement that pairs perfectly with the tone of the text. Readers will experience the instruments in an orchestra with a sense of wonder. A perfect book selection before a trip to see a concert.

Rock N Roll Dogs by David Davis and Chuck Galey is sure to be a hit with your kids. Humorous dogs introduce readers to rock n roll rhythm with irresistible charm. Get ready to dance at the Doggy Disco in your blue sued shoes!

This Jazz Man by Karen Ehrhardt and R.G. Roth is a jazzy take on the classic song, “This Old Man.” The book begins, “This old man, he plays one, he plays rhythm on his thumb…” and later a “tap-tap shuffle slap,” will have everyone toe tapping along.  Jazz greats are presented in the book, which will appeal to kids and adults. A wonderful celebration of the richness of jazz and a great learning opportunity for families, too.

Whether you enjoy classical music, rock and roll, or jazz, you can find great books to expand your kids’ knowledge and encourage them to learn something new. No matter what type of music stirs your soul, share it with your kids!
