It's finally summer, the time of the year that many outdoor-loving families look forward to more than any other.

Hiking, biking, swimming, kayaking, and all of the other great outdoor adventures that are available seem to be even more special in the bright summer sun. But before you head outdoors to enjoy those sun-filled days, take a few minutes to make sure your family has a safe summer experience!

First, remember that summer heat can make your body lose moisture quickly during exercise, even when it does not seem to be that warm outside. Drink plenty of fluids such as water to make sure that you don't become dehydrated. Especially keep a watch on children outside, as their smaller bodies can dehydrate more quickly in the summer heat. Before heading out for any outdoor activity, make sure everyone has a water bottle to bring along for the adventure. Know the signs of overheating and take frequent breaks when the weather is warm to prevent heatstroke, too.

Water isn't the only necessity for playing in the summer sun. Even overcast days allow powerful UV rays from the sun to contact your skin, possibly leading to sunburn. As a good summer precaution, apply sunscreen to all exposed areas of your skin before your family heads out for the day, even if the day starts out cloudy. Going swimming or doing strenuous exercise that will make you sweat? Reapply sunscreen periodically throughout the day to make sure you stay protected while you have fun. Going outside with children? Make sure older kids reapply sunscreen, too. Many times tweens and teens are having too much fun to bother with sunscreen, and they can get the sunburns to prove it!

While you're outside, it's also important to think about protecting you and your family from some of the summer critters that are lurking in the wooded and grassy areas that most people love to play in. Summer temperatures are perfect for ticks, mosquitoes, and fleas, common pests that can carry dangerous germs to you, your family, and even your pets. Take a few minutes to research what kinds of pest repellent would work best for you and your family. There are many choices available, from natural repellents made from plant extracts to products containing DEET, a powerful repellent for those venturing into the more remote summer locations. By looking at all of your choices you can decide what is best for your family's protection.

Summer is certainly one of the best times of the year for families to get outside and enjoy the beauty of the natural world. With a little preparation and some check-ins throughout the day, your entire family can have a great outdoor experience in the summer sun. Plan ahead, stay safe, and enjoy the world while it's Positively Green!

Here's another hint: Kids heading off to summer camp? Apply sunscreen and bug spray as part of your morning routine before they head out for the day. Kids are usually having so much fun at camp they forget to apply them when they are there. And don't forget the water bottle!
