Fireplace Safety for Children and Parents

E-mail Print PDF

Fireplaces are great and can be used both inside your home and outside on your patio area as long as they are installed correctly and used properly.

Having children in your home makes it even more important to ensure that anything of a danger is safe for them to be around. Fireplaces make an area look great and can allow you to have cozy winter evenings in front of it with family and friends. You will need to make sure that everyone in the family understands the safety elements to a fireplace.

Fireplaces in your garden will look great but as the children are more likely to be running around you need to ensure that you are being very careful with it. It is best to have your outdoor fireplace in a separate area and even fenced off with some seating in the area. This will help the children to understand that they cannot run around in this area. Although they should not be running around indoors, if they do, they need to be told that this is dangerous near the fireplace. The rules for fireplaces are still the same whether they are indoor or outdoor ones.

Buying a screen is an essential part of your fireplace, the screen can be placed in front of the fire to stop items being thrown into the fire and also to stop sparks leaving the fire. The screen can be taken away and replaced very easily when you need to. When you are all sitting around the fireplace, the need for a screen may not be necessary as there will be adults there. You should ensure that there is an adult at all times sat around the fireplace. Children move very fast and it would only take a split second for them to be in the area.

Leaving your fireplace unsupervised is not recommended as this is when accidents and injuries can occur. You should ensure that all fuels and debris is away from the fireplace and the area surrounding it is clean and nothing is likely to catch fire. This could also include trees and shrubs especially if they are old and dried out. You should ensure that there are no overhanging branches that could be a potential risk.

Fire extinguishers are also advised to be kept near the fireplace just in case things do get out of hand. All members of the family should be taught safety rules and how to behave around the fire. Although fireplaces are an ideal place to gather they can be dangerous in the wrong hands. If you teach your children how to behave around fires and fireplaces then they will understand the importance of behaving the right way.

The only way children learn is to be taught and you need to ensure that you teach your children well, if they understand how to behave then they will grow up with that knowledge. This can then be used when they are older and they can educate other people.
