Decorating with Curtains

E-mail Print PDF

By Sonya Weiss, Decorating On a Budget - Curtains are used to close out light when the sun's too bright or to give a measure of privacy to a room.

But your curtain choices don't have to be limited to the ones you find either in a retail store or through online shopping.

If you'll do some research, you'll see that one type of curtain decorating is known as silkscreen inking. Artists with some measure of talent draw beautiful designs on material and the curtains are then used as curtains but are also a work of art. Unless you can do this yourself, these can be quite expensive.

But you can create your own special curtains with just a stencil and some fabric paint and you can do it in every room in the house if you choose. Teens can have curtains stenciled with the names of their favorite teams or colleges, personalized with their names or even covered in what words conveying their dreams.

Start by choosing a material that works well with fabric paints. Find a motif you like that would work as a stencil. You can select a stencil either by printing one free online - you can find a wide selection of free stencils - or go buy one at a craft store.

Next, lay the curtains down on cardboard and fasten the material flat so that it won't bunch up. Attach the stencil to the material using straight pins. Using a stencil brush, apply the pattern to the material. Leave the curtain lying flat until the paint is completely dry and then hang.

Happy Decorating!

A few years ago, her oldest daughter persuaded her to send a children's short story to an editor and to Sonya's astonishment and delight, the story sold. In April of 2003, she won Harlequin's Writing Round Robin contest. Since then, her work has appeared on various online websites as well as in her local newspaper.
