Choosing the perfect mattress is of course important so that you can get a good and comfortable night's sleep, but it's also important to provide proper support for your back, spine and neck.
Sleeping on a bad mattress not only disturbs your sleep, but it can also lead to headaches, aches and pains, and spinal alignment problems. If you sleep alone, your primary concern will be finding a mattress that is comfortable for you and suits your needs. However, if you sleep with your partner, you will have to find a mattress that is either individually adjustable, or which suits the needs of both of you.
The Advantages of a Firm Mattress
While not everybody enjoys the comfort of a firm mattress, those who have back problems tend to benefit from the extra support that the firmness can provide. Sleeping on a softer mattress that doesn't provide this level of support can sometimes cause backaches in the morning, especially if you already have problems with your back. When selecting a firm mattress, it can help to try out several firmness levels in the store until you find one that feels comfortable for you. Another option when choosing a firm mattress is to get one that provides this level of support, but which has a pillow top to the mattress to provide extra cushioning to add extra comfort. If one person prefers a firm mattress, while their partner prefers more softness, there are mattresses available that are adjustable on both sides of the bed to help satisfy both people's sleeping preferences.
Spring Mattresses versus Foam
Traditional mattress designs often include innerspring support. These springs provide the support you need, while the layers of foam and cushioning provide the comfort. While there are several different kinds of spring mattresses available, including individually wrapped coils which can help prevent the movement of one person while in bed from disturbing the sleep of their partner. Coil style mattresses provide good support, but mattresses made from latex foam are also a popular choice. Latex foam mattresses do not have innersprings, but instead have a supportive latex foam core. Latex foam is comfortable, durable, and breathable, and is preferred by many over a coil style mattress. Memory foam is another popular choice when selecting a mattress. These mattresses are often a good choice for those who suffer from pain produced by the pressure of their body against the mattress. Memory foam mattresses also tend not to transfer motion from one side of the bed to the other, which can be helpful for people who sleep in the same bed. These mattresses also do not have innersprings, with the support being provided by the foam.
Get a Good Mattress Warranty
Although there are certainly cheap mattresses available, choosing a well-made quality mattress will insure that you will have years of comfort. Selecting a good mattress can represent a sizable monetary investment, so you will want to make sure any mattress you buy includes a good warranty. Most mattresses are well-made and will last for years, but having a warranty will insure that you will be able to get a refund or replacement if you do experience problems.
