Great Colors to Paint a Teenage Boy’s Room

By Alyssa Davis

Decorating a room for a teen can be a lot of fun, especially if you involve your teen in the planning process.

A teen's bedroom is often considered to be an extension of their own personality, so it is important to let the teen help make as many of the decorating decisions as possible. By working together, you will be able to come up with a great color scheme for the room that you will be happy with and that your teen will love.

Using Vibrant Wall Colors

Teens are notorious for loving intense wall shades when painting their room. Although you might have a preference for lighter and more neutral shades, remember that painting a room is easy, and you can always repaint a room in the future. If your teenage boy loves dark colors like blue or green, this can often be used to create a very dramatic look in the room, especially if lighter colored furniture and decorating accessories are used to provide a light color accent. If you still feel that the color is too dark, see if the two of you can compromise by using the same color, only several shades lighter. You can also use a dark color in a teenage boy's bedroom effectively by using the color to paint one wall, while using a lighter coordinating shade for the other three walls. Using the dark color on the wall with the most visual interest can be a great way of creating a focal point in the room.

Exciting Neutral Shades for a Teenage Boy's Room

Teenage boys tend to love the outdoors, so painting the room using natural colors can create a nice effect. Use a combination of two or three neutral colors, such as one darker color and two lighter colors, to create a coordinated look. For example, coffee brown combined with taupe and cream can create a nice look. Or use a combination of colors that resemble camouflage for an interesting effect. By keeping the wall colors neutral, your teen will have more flexibility to add interesting color accents to the room with accessories. This makes it easy to change the overall look of the room when your teen changes their mind about their color preferences.

Find Color Inspiration from a School, Sport or Hobby

Although teenage boys are not generally big on the idea of a theme room, they often have a favorite sports team or hobby. You can use team or school colors very effectively when decorating a teen's room, especially if they have a lot of memorabilia that they are also using as decorations. A favorite hobby can also provide the inspiration for a room's color theme. For example, if he loves hiking, use outdoors colors such as deep greens, brown and beige. You can also pick up color combinations from other items within the room. For example, if he has a favorite guitar that is a prized possession, pick up some of the colors from the guitar to use when decorating.
