Home Life and Style Interior Decorating A New Look for the Bathroom

A New Look for the Bathroom

E-mail Print PDF

By Sonya Weiss - Decorating on a Budget

If you look at the photograph included here, it’s easy to see what went wrong in the decorating of this bathroom. First, the sink chosen is far too big for the space and it dwarfs the counter. Both the sink and the counter are out of balance. Secondly, the elongated toilet is also a detriment to space. Neither flow for the area at all. It appears the decorator was trying to go for a more modern appearance, but the tile definitely erases that plan.

For one, there’s far too much tile for the area. You can see it on the wall by the tub, on the floor and even stuck on the outside of the tub area. The tile overshadows the entire room simply because it gives the bathroom an outdated look despite the modern sink and toilet.

If you have a bathroom that either has outdated tile or too much tile, you can transform the room without redoing the tile job which can be very expensive. Instead of doing all that backbreaking work, you can paint over the tile (just don’t paint over the tile in the tub).

What you need to do is to first gently sand the tile with sandpaper. Your goal is to rough up the tiles enough so that the paint will adhere. When you’re done sanding, clean off the dust extremely well and apply a good quality primer (don’t skimp here).

Finally, using an oil based paint, paint over the primer and you’re done!

Happy Decorating!

A few years ago, her oldest daughter persuaded her to send a children's short story to an editor and to Sonya's astonishment and delight, the story sold. In April of 2003, she won Harlequin's Writing Round Robin contest. Since then, her work has appeared on various online websites as well as in her local newspaper.
