Ring in the New Year with Clean Closets

Out With the Old

Whether or not you make a New Year's resolution to get organized, cleaning your closets can give you a good head start for a clutter-free, less stressful New Year.

Starting the year with clean closets can be just the fresh start you need to set a positive mood for the entire year.

The first step to cleaning and organizing your closets is to go through everything and evaluate what you might have that you really no longer need. This includes clothes that are either out of style or in a size that will not realistically wear again, accessories that are outdated, or shoes that aren't comfortable. When cleaning a closet, the best way to get the job done is to use several different boxes for sorting. Use one box for anything that is junk that can just be discarded, one box for items that should be donated to charity, and one box for anything that you wish to sell, such as in a garage sale or on an online auction site. If you find items that you intend to keep but which do not belong in the closet, return them to where they should be. Plan to store your off-season clothing in a different closet or storage area, to free up closet space for what you currently need. Once you have everything sorted out and are down to just the items that should be stored in the closet, then you are ready to start the organization process.

Invest in a Closet Organization System

Most closets can be made not only more organized but also more efficient simply by using a closet organization system. Once you know what you need to store in the closet, shop around for an organizer style that matches your needs. These systems not only provide space for hanging items such as clothing, but also can add bins, drawers, hooks and other types of storage accessories that make your closet a better fit for how you intend to use it. If you select a system that can be expanded, then you will be able to adjust whenever your closet storage needs change in the future.

Use Other Closet Organization and Storage Features

Besides installing a closet organization system, there are many other things you can add to your closet to help you keep everything organized and accessible. Using a shoe rack designed to hang on the back of your closet door can help keep shoes organized and within easy reach. Add a peg rack to organize belts, scarves and other small accessories. If you have more clothes than anything else to store in the closet, consider removing the top closet shelf and install a second clothes rod instead. This can give you twice the amount of closet rod storage for clothes, and the upper rod is handy for hanging shorter items such as shirts, while the standard closet rod can be used for longer items such as slacks or dresses. If you do keep the top closet shelf, organize it with bins or boxes, labeled clearly, so that all items are organized neatly instead of simply being tossed onto the shelf.
