Personalize Baby’s Room with a Stencil

As you are stenciling, you want to take care not to blur your images, and if you are stenciling multiple colors, let each color dry between paint applications. In our example, we have chosen to recreate colors from a vintage nursery and personalize the wall with baby’s name above the crib.

When you want to stencil a room you can sketch out the room and decide where you want to add your stencil to the wall. Then begin by planning out your design on paper. Once you are happy with your design, you can transfer it to a stencil card and outline your design in a felt tip pen. After outlining your design in a marking pen, you can begin to cut away the colored areas using a craft knife. Make sure that you do your cutting on a stack of newspapers or a flattened cardboard box.

Once your stencil is cut out, you can begin painting your walls. Use a stencil brush, and make sure to dab off any excess paint to keep your stencil from smudging. Or you can use spray paint to create the design with your stencil. You can create an entire border with a single, basic stencil element. In this case we have chosen a small branch of leaves as our base stencil. This way we can position it around the top of the ceiling and join the groups of leaves together with another stencil of a ribbon

After creating an empty box from the same leaf stencil that you use for the border of the room, you can personalize it with baby’s name. To center the name start by painting your box stencil onto another piece of stencil card. Then you can take the card and sketch out the name. To make sure that the name is centered begin by placing the center letters in the middle of the box and spacing the remaining letters evenly towards either end. Then use your craft knife to cut out the letters of the name and cut out a leaf in each corner of the box to match the design to the wall. By cutting out a piece of the leaf design you also have a convenient place to tape your name stencil to the wall. Now you are ready to add baby’s name as the finishing touch to your stenciled nursery.
