Decorating and furnishing a baby's nursery is one of the most exciting times during pregnancy. One often overlooked aspect of the room's decor is comfortable furniture for mom.
Since, during the early days of infancy, mom will be spending almost as much time in the nursery as the baby herself, it is important to plan for comfortable seating and pillows. A happy, comfortable mom will be better able to take care of herself and her baby. When planning the room, consider adding some of the following items to the furniture arrangement.
Rocker
Rockers are traditional nursery accessories. They come in a wide variety of styles, shapes and finishes. Choose from wooden rockers with flat seats, wooden rockers with slatted seats, metal frame rockers with extra padding, swivel rockers, and more. Although the wooden rocker may be appealing simply for tradition's sake, the reality is that wooden rockers are very hard and additional padding will need to be purchased. Many home furnishing stores and online retailers sell wooden rocker cushions. The highest quality cushions should be a natural choice, because comfortable seating for mom is a must. Swivel, padded rockers are another option. This type of rocker tends to be significantly more comfortable. Usually available in neutral colors, the swivel rocker is a good choice for comfortable seating in the baby's nursery.
Recliner
Recliners offer a different type of seating option. They offer built in foot support, comfortable padding and come in a wide selection of colors and fabrics. The drawback to recliners is that they tend to be enormous. If the nursery is small, like most nurseries are, there simply is no room for a large recliner. However, if the space is sufficient, a rocking recliner would combine the best of the rocking chair with the comfort of the recliner.
Footrest
A footrest of some sort is essential. This often overlooked piece of furniture helps mom keep her back and hips aligned while nursing or holding the baby. A simple, angled stool works just as well as an expensive ottoman for the foot of the chair. Consider painting a stool for an added personal touch.
Pillows
Moms love pillows. When nursing or holding a baby, pillows are essential for providing support for mom's arms and the baby's body. There are curved pillows that wrap around mom's waist that are perfect for nursing; they can be found at any baby supply store and come with removable and interchangeable covers to protect them. Also invest in a good neck pillow. A neck pillow will support the neck when mom falls asleep while sitting up. Do not skimp on pillow quality and variety, as they are essential to mom's comfort.
Choosing comfortable furniture for mom in the baby's nursery requires shopping around and trying different pieces. Be sure to sit in each chair before deciding on the one that will work the best. Durable fabric, a comfortable seat and back support, and a reasonable price tag can all be found with a bit of searching.
