Soul to Soul Parenting

By Sylvia Cochran -  Parenting by the Book  - Soul to Soul Parenting is an introduction and hands-on ‘how to’ for the spiritually/metaphysically-minded parent who wishes to also raise a spiritual child.

It is noteworthy that this is not a book geared for the Christian parent, although many of the concepts contained within the book can be transferred to an evangelical worldview and faith.

Ms. Burnside succeeds in teaching parents the nuts and bolts of communicating a sense of spirituality that transcends religious faiths and traditional approaches. It encourages the development of an individual approach to communion with the deity from childhood on; in this manner, this path will hopefully become one that the individual travels for a lifetime. Concurrently with this approach, Soul to Soul Parenting teaches a tolerance of (and respect for) opposing points of view and religious teachings.

Case in point is the approach outlined in Chapter 11, aptly entitled “Many Paths up the Mountaintop.” This chapter highlights the overall approach a spiritual parent takes when rearing kids: “for me, for now.” As a Christian parent myself, this obviously stands in stark contrast to the biblical teaching that only Christ is the way to God the Father. Even so, I find that there are plenty of activities Ms. Burnside advocates that accentuate a Christian walk and lifestyle.

Soul to Soul Parenting is the kind of book that I conditionally recommend to the evangelical Christian parent. If mom or dad is willing to put in the time and effort to adapt the lessons to a more Bible-based message, it is a treasure trove of activities and discussion opportunities. On the flipside, if the parent is unwilling to plan out the activities and contemplate the information and biblical parallels, it may be better to opt for a book that is directly geared for the evangelical market.

This book is excellent for the spiritual parent who has an all-inclusive worldview and champions tolerance and coexistence over faith-based dogma.

In the spirit of full disclosure, the author wishes to thank Annie Burnside for providing me with a review copy of Soul to Soul Parenting, free of charge.
