By Sylvia Cochran - Parenting By the Book -  Review of Loveable Liam: Affirmations for a Perfectly Imperfect Child.

By Jane Whelen Banks

Jessica Kingsley Publishers

Publication Date: November 2008

ISBN: 1843108992

32 pages

Loveable Liam is a recurring children’s book character that was created by Jane Banks. The books are well known in the parenting community that deals with children who have Asperger's Syndrome. Unfortunately, the books have not gained nearly as much attention in wider circles, which truly is a shame.

At face-value, Affirmations for a Perfectly Imperfect Child is a children’s book com

plete with stick figure illustrations. That being said, beyond the 32 pages, simple text and cute illustrations, there is a much deeper lesson for the adults who are undoubtedly reading the words to their kids.

You see, Liam is a bit of a handful and does some things that cause mom and dad to get angry, frustrated and even overwhelmed. Even so, the book highlights that nothing can separate a child from the love the parents hold for him. Thus, Loveable Liam teaches mom and dad to look beyond the momentary annoyance and find a praiseworthy quality or action they can affirm. Pretty soon, it becomes obvious that there are copious amounts of commendable acts and attitudes.

Affirmations for a Perfectly Imperfect Child is a gentle nudge to parents -- who might have gotten so focused on performance, age-appropriate milestones or just do not take kindly to frequent temper tantrums – to always remember their children’s good qualities. Consider that in two months from today, the reason for parental frustration will be long forgotten while the impact of a stern word or harsh discipline – stemming from mom or dad’s momentary loss of temper – can last a lifetime.
