Enjoy the Warmer Months without Breaking the Bank

As we enter the fifth month of 2008, the economy continues on a downward spiral. Every way you look or turn there is more disappointing news and sadly all of us are effected one way or the other by it. But, we should not allow a stagnate economy to rob us of the joy and happiness that spring and summer always usher in. Here are a few low cost ideas to help you enjoy yourself, while staying on a budget, during the warmer months ahead.

As it warms up and you start planning for summer vacations, consider getting season passes to your local theme parks for fun during the entire summer rather than planning one full week of a vacation. Most families never visit all of the attractions at a theme park during one visit. By purchasing season passes, you can enjoy every nook and cranny of the park: the shows, the food, and the rides. You can take your time and enjoy every feature rather than rushing through the park as your time runs out. Additionally, season passes are normally paid for after the first two visits. For those who are concerned about the excess costs of foods and drinks, pack a picnic lunch of your favorite sandwiches, crackers, and drinks. Your children will have so much fun that they won’t mind going back to the car to eat the lunch so long as they know they’ll be returning.

Another option for a summer outing is a trip to your closest beach or lake. Again, pack a lunch and some sunscreen and the gas will be your only major expense. Take along books, puzzles, sand buckets, beach towels and enjoy the breeze as you watch the sunset.

There are a plethora of local festivals and picnics from Memorial Day through Labor Day, often too many to take in each and every one. As a matter of fact you could spend every Saturday throughout the entire spring and summer seasons enjoying festivals and picnics in your hometown and surrounding cities. Small festivals allow you and your family to learn about local culture and delicacies, and artists. You will also meet lots of new people and learn about new businesses and activities. Most festivals commence with a parade of local organizations and businesses. There are also outdoor bands, disc jockeys, and local musicians that you can enjoy free of charge. While you may want to bring a few dollars for purchasing handmade crafts, face painting, and don’t forget the elephant ears and cotton candy, that’s all optional. It is a good idea to bring lawn chairs and picnic blankets to some of these events especially if you plan to make a day of it.

Spring and summer are favorite seasons of the year for most. Take time now to begin planning how you’ll enjoy the coming days outside of work. Summer outings and vacations, don’t have to be expensive. Make the most of local attractions and explore festivals and events that you’ve often taken for granted.
