It IS Easy Being Green!
By Jillian Bietz
In a day and age where we are encouraged to "go green" and be "au natural" by purchasing and preparing organic foods, it's not a surprise that some green fashionistas have begun dressing environmentally conscious as well!
Not only have organic garments graced the runways at fashion weeks around the world, and are adored by designers such as Betsey Johnson and Stella McCartney, many of our favorite chain stores are jumping on the unrefined bandwagon! For example, both Levi's and H & M make jeans out of organic cotton and bamboo plant, and American Apparel makes items such as tee shirts and sweats out of organic cottons.
But watch out for fakes! Even though new, sparkling white cotton garments may seem earth friendly, if they aren't made ecologically, they can be very damaging! Because cotton is the top produced plant on earth, non-organic growers treat the fibers with harsh chemicals and pesticides-leaving pollution in the air and a great deal of damage to the flora and fauna.
So next time you step outside sporting your organic burlap tunic and your hemp plant Capri pants, realize that not only should you be thankful for enhancing the health of the earth (and looking chic doing it, at that!) but you are also doing yourself a favor by forgoing that itchy polyester-nylon sweater!
