Look Books

By Jillian Bietz

In fashion, "look books" are essential. A cross between a scrapbook and a portfolio, a look book can be virtually anything you want it to be. While in the professional world, a look book can be considered a compilation of ones' work (such as sketches, photos, etc) look books are awesome in documenting your personal favorite from style trends, inspirations and more-even if you are the only one who'll flip through it.

  • Three ring binder - It's the neatest way to display your look book. Consider using plastic sleeves for important pages.
  • Paper - Depending on how presentable your want your book to be, anything from construction paper to computer paper to patterned paper or even ruled notebook paper works. If you are planning on collaging, however, heavy-duty thicker paper works best.
  • Tools - Make sure you have a variety of pens, markers, crayons, glitter, glue etc around. You never know when inspiration will strike. Make your book colorful, fun, and personal. Make it scream "you"!
  • Now comes the fun part. Find inspiration! Explore! Search through your junk drawers or take a walk in the park. Take pictures of what you come across. Perhaps the Polaroid of you at age three in that rainbow romper will bring back creative memories or maybe the gorgeous yellow color of those Gerber daisies in your neighbor's front lawn will be an inspiration. You never know!
  • Perhaps one of the greatest craft project is the collage - Browse through those old magazines and cut them up. Don't have any magazines? Ask your friends if they have any lying around or head to the library. Oftentimes, they sell back issues for mere cents. Consult your local librarian.

  • If you have access to a computer and/or a computer with a printer, - Browse online and search for your favorite fashion looks from the past to the present. Print out the picture, draw what you see or write down what it is you like about the look; anything goes.
