The Health Foundation has chosen to focus its grantmaking on oral health improvement by providing nearly $5 million over the past five years to two multi-year projects, the Central Mass Oral Health Initiative (CMOHI) based in Worcester and the Oral Health Initiative of North Central Mass (OHINCM) based in Fitchburg. These projects have joined the efforts of the statewide Oral Health Advocacy Task Force, facilitated by Health Care For All, to change public policies in order to prevent dental decay and improve access to dental care for vulnerable populations. One important policy change they are seeking is to extend fluoridation statewide.
So, I want to make sure you are aware of this very important piece of public health legislation currently in front of the Massachusetts legislature and the very simple way in which you can support it. The Joint Committee on Children and Families and the Joint Committee on Public Health are holding a hearing this fall that will promote good oral health by calling on Massachusetts cities and towns with more than 5,000 residents on a public water supply to fluoridate their public drinking water.
I am asking you to join us in supporting fluoridation by doing two things:
Sign the petition urging legislators to pass this bill that calls for cities and towns with a population of 5,000 or more to add fluoride to their public water supplies.
