I was reading an article from one of my favorite doctors, Dr. Mark Hyman, about a trip he took to China where he was studying their views on how food is more than just calories we put in our bodies…it is medicine that can prevent disease, transform our health, and event heal our DNA. The notion that we can just shift our eating habits and live healthy lives seems so simple and yet so powerful.

The health of our country and our children is poor because of the simple aspect of what we put in our bodies.  What we eat programs our body, our DNA, with messages of health or disease.  We view food as something convenient to fill the gut and keep us moving through our day.

Our children need this information.  Their health depends on the messages they are receiving through their food.  There is an epidemic of childhood obesity with over 50% of our children overweight.  We are seeing type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol in teens and earlier.  All they need is good food.

In China, each meal is considered for it's detoxifying and healing qualities. It is used before any pharmacology or surgery.  Not just Chinese herbs but everyday food.  The foods are simple and prepared fresh.  Unfortunately there is a rise of obesity and disease in China because they have started to incorporate our eating habits.  This is unfortunate because they really should be teaching us.

Here are some ways to incorporate health giving foods into your routine.  These foods are convenient and very tasty.

  • Eat raw fruits and vegetables every day as snacks
  • steam your vegetables, this is a quick and healthy way to cook them
  • cut up your vegetables ahead of time so all you have to do is reach in the refrigerator for convenience
  • drink at least one green tea every day
  • eat more vegetables than meat
  • eat less

Eat a colorful array of fruits and vegetables.  The more colors you eat the better.  Examples of health giving foods are

  • Broccoli
  • Red Grapes
  • Avocado
  • Squash
  • Berries
  • Green tea
  • onions
  • eggplant
  • carrots
  • spinach
  • tomatoes

As you can see I have included every color of the rainbow in this list.  All of these have great phytonutrients that have detoxifying qualities and fight against cancer, heart disease, and certainly obesity.

Get rid of the notion that food is just calories. We are all looking for that magic pill to make us skinny.  Looks tend to be more important to us than actual health.  The fact is, if you eat healthy food and give your body the right messages, you will naturally be thin and healthy. Stop counting calories and start eating your rainbow.  If you would like more information you can go to my website and get my free e-book "Eating a Rainbow"   www.ConceptsInWellness.com
