The Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators honors books of excellence each year. The Golden Kite Awards include the categories of fiction, non-fiction, and picture books. The SCBWI also chooses one book each year to receive the Sid Fleischman Award for Humor. Each of the books selected this year are worthy of a spot on your family bookshelf!

 

 

Golden Kite Award – Fiction Winner

Turtle in Paradise by Jennifer Holm

Based in the 1930’s, young Turtle is send to live with relative in Key West after her mother takes a job as a housekeeper in a home where Turtle is not welcomed. The 11 year old learns to adapt to a new way of life, filled with heart and humor for readers 8 and up.

 

Golden Kite Award – Nonfiction Winner

The Good, the Bad, and the Barbie: A Doll's History and Her Impact on Us by Tanya Lee Stone

 

For decades, young girls and even grown women have been enamored with Barbie. This book examined the many ramifications of Barbi’s influence on generations. Filled with interesting photos and thought provoking discussions, this book is a compelling read for ages 12 an up.

 

Golden Kite Award – Picture Book Text Winner

Big Red Lollipop by Rukhsana Khan, illustrated by Sophie Blackall
A deeply engaging picture book about siblings is through the experiences of Rubina and her sisters. When her mother insists Rubina take her sister to a birthday party Rubina is invited to, Rbina know it will be a disaster – and she is right. Rubina’s family has different customs, and this touching tale illuminates the meshing of cultures so many families experience.

Barbara Bietz -is a children's author, magazine writer, children's book reviewer, and past chair of the Sydney Taylor Book Award Committee. She loves talking about the creative process, books and the craft of writing.
