two girls ice skating

By Cheryl Moeller

I love an ice skate escape on a moonlit night

Skating tightly hand in hand with my husband

I love spring winter fall but heart Old Man Winter

Freedom to walk on frozen water only cold brings

I love forging my way frozen pond yet untouched

Walking across the iced-up lake instead of around it

I love saving all fall for a new pair of ice skates

Treasure that brings great icy pleasure

I love frozen lake or pond best century back looking

Skating on vintage skates with wooden runners

I love shovels pushing snow off winter’s lake

Watching Mr. Broom clean the ice at break

I love summer heat in our gigantic family thermos

Hearing grinding my skates being sharpened

I love skates useful, indispensable, works for me

Skating across the lake transportation to the train

I love homemade mittens and gloves for warm fashion

You won’t skate long without long warm underwear on.

I love my kids in matching yellow puffy parkas

Pretending we’re all in the rigid nutcracker march

I love everyone I know gathering at the ice rink

Skating while it’s snowing is an extra dividend

I love people who love to fly (skate) as much as I

Thrilling, Chilling, Spilling, Swirling, Twirling, Curling

I love feeling in Warming House like a north woods cabin

Warming House like warm swimming pool locker room

I love stoneware mugs keeping hot chocolate hot

Baking sprinkle cookies shaped like ice skates

I love bonfires on the shore at night with no other lights on

Outdoor skating opens worlds can’t improve on imagination
