bedspread mint brown leaves and silver leaves

By Sonya Weiss – Interior Design

For the next few columns, I’ll be interviewing people about their home redecorating projects. First up is Alex Benedict.

Alex is the multi-talented author of dark fantasy fiction with romantic twists. You can check out more about her at http://www.alexbenedict.ca/

1. What made you decide to redecorate the bedroom?

A: It was a lark, really. I was out shopping and happened upon a beautiful comforter set (on sale!). I intended to purchase the set only), but once I got home, I realized it didn't match well with the color on my walls, nor my pictures, nor my rug … and, well, one purchase turned into many.

2. What did you start with?

I started with the bedspread. It's a minty green with dark brown leaves and silver flowers, so I chose a minty green wall paint just a few shades lighter (so the bed didn't get lost in the room). I then needed accent cushions to break up the pattern of the bedspread, and choose a blue and silver cushion in various shapes and fabric textures (again to break up the design, but still keep the color scheme). I wanted some unusual art pieces, as well, and purchased a large "wheel" ornament and a hanging lantern that comes down from the ceiling.

3. What obstacles did you have to overcome with this redecorating project?

Space was my obstacle. The original orientation of the furniture left big gaps on either side of the bed, and yet there wasn't anything I could place in these gaps without it looking like something was "floating" in the middle of the room. I had to move every single piece to a new location, and surprisingly, it all fit soooo much better. There's a flow now, like each piece has a purpose and belongs there.

4. What did you learn from the project?

That small changes can turn into weekend-long overhauls. You can never just change one piece (at least I can't)…. kinda like eating chips. 🙂
