Holiday Interior Decorating

Christmas Holiday Decorating
by Sonya Weiss

fireplace decorating holiday

When the Christmas holidays draw near, I'm almost as excited as my children are. I love everything about Christmas. The smell of cinnamon and freshly baked cookies permeate the air. I try to have all the gift shopping and decorating finished early so I can sit back under a thick quilt, sip hot cocoa and enjoy the way the lights from the tree sparkle like miniature diamonds.

Take a large glass bowl and fill it with gold or silver Christmas tree balls. I use both the shiny and the textured ones together. Makes a lovely decoration.

You'll need the following: pine garland, (the less expensive kind bend easier and will stay in place), red bead garland, four to six medium sized red candles, and candleholders.

If you can't find the right candleholders, in a pinch, you can use thick ceramic saucers. Lightly melt the bottom of the candle and press it into the position you want. Once the wax hardens, it'll hold the candle in place.

Place the candles on the mantle, arrange the pine garland and on the front of the fireplace, loop the red bead garland in a swag.

Using plain white mittens, soak them in a pot of warm tea water, (the more tea bags, the darker the mittens). Once they're dry, on the outside of the mitten, near the cuff, glue pieces of cinnamon sticks and a bit of greenery--either mistletoe or pine. String the mittens together on a jute rope. They can be hung from either the fireplace, the back of a chair or in front of a window.

Happy Decorating!

About Sonya Weiss

From the time she was a child, Sonya spun stories to entertain herself and her siblings. Once she graduated high school, she put her writing aside and attended college where she studied Secondary Education, majoring in English. The writing bug never quite left her and once she had children, Sonya would write stories for their enjoyment.

A few years ago, her oldest daughter persuaded her to send a children's short story to an editor and to Sonya's astonishment and delight, the story sold. In April of 2003, she won Harlequin's Writing Round Robin contest. Since then, her work has appeared on various online websites such as http://www.pregnancytoday.com as well as in her local newspaper.

Sonya currently resides in the beautiful state of South Carolina with her husband and four children and works as a freelance writer.
