Pretty Camouflage for the Uglies
by Sonya Weiss
As I was debating what to write about this month, my daughter laughingly suggested I write a column about "decorating with dust" or how to hide the ugly parts of our home. We all have to deal with them.
There's no doubt about it, life will throw some ugly parts your way. But when it comes to your home, you don't have to keep the ugly parts out in plain sight. You can hide even the most unattractive parts of your home and make the camouflage an attractive part of your design.
As visitors approach your home, can they see that ugly garden hose reel? Your air conditioner with all its loops and coils? Your garbage cans? We get used to seeing the unattractive necessities around the outside of our homes and we don’t give them a second thought, but they do stick out whenever guests come over.
They don't have to be an eyesore, though. You can either build or buy pretty camouflage for the uglies by using simple posts and a trellis or two. If you're not handy with tools or you’re short on time, many home improvement stores sell trellis screens already pre-made and there are many great designs available.
Since the trellis will be outdoors, you'll want to choose the most durable trellis you can get. I've always been partial to the white ones with the smaller squares, they remind me if white picket fences.
It's the attention to detail around your home that can make a big difference in how you and others see it.
Happy Decorating!
