A Trendy Furniture Update
by Sonya Weiss
If you have a piece of furniture that you really love but it's seen better days, you don't have to stain it or toss it out to give it a vibrant new look. When the furniture you love can't hold up to a refinishing, you can cover it with wallpaper. Keep in mind that curved areas such as the legs on a dresser or on a table will be difficult to cover since they're not flat surfaces. What you'll have to do with those is head to a wood store either online or locally and purchase table legs or cabinet feet.
There's such a huge selection of wallpaper, you can really find some beautiful designs for your piece. I've found wallpaper that looked great on furniture in designs like flower bouquets to circus performers to cover a dresser for a child's room.
Let's say you'd like to cover a small dresser that's been in your family for generations. Remove all the drawers and wipe down the dresser with a slightly moistened cloth. Once it's dry, you're ready to begin. As you're working to apply the wallpaper, make sure you work out any air bubbles along the way. Once you've applied the wallpaper, cover it with a sealer to protect it.
If you don't want to cover the entire dresser with wallpaper but you want a new look, you can remove the knobs from the front of the drawers and just cover those with wallpaper. Apply a coat of matching paint to the rest of the dresser and you'll have a lovely piece of furniture.
Happy Decorating!
About Sonya Weiss
From the time she was a child, Sonya spun stories to entertain herself and her siblings. Once she graduated high school, she put her writing aside and attended college where she studied Secondary Education, majoring in English. The writing bug never quite left her and once she had children, Sonya would write stories for their enjoyment.
A few years ago, her oldest daughter persuaded her to send a children's short story to an editor and to Sonya's astonishment and delight, the story sold. In April of 2003, she won Harlequin's Writing Round Robin contest. Since then, her work has appeared on various online websites such as http://www.pregnancytoday.com as well as in her local newspaper.
Sonya currently resides in the beautiful state of South Carolina with her husband and four children and works as a freelance writer.
