Creating Wall Silhouettes
by Sonya Weiss
Wall Silhouettes are an easy and attractive way to make any room come alive. You can buy silhouettes from many online shops. These creations are made from materials such as copper, steel but there are other long lasting materials available as well. The prices will average from around sixty dollars to a few hundred depending on the size and intricacy of the design.
Silhouettes don't have to be a silhouette of a person. Any object can be turned into a wall silhouette. I've seen guitars in a Paris evening as a silhouette, even a beautiful iron gate. So you're not limited by what you can have as a silhouette.
You don't have to buy one though, you can paint it directly on the wall if you desire. You can freehand an image on to paper and have it enlarged at a copy store or you can use transparencies and an overhead projector.
Once your image is ready, tape the enlarged silhouette to the wall and trace around the outline. If you use a projector, just show the image on whatever surface you plan to paint. Once you've outlined the image, paint the inside with acrylic paint. You don't have to use black as the color choice, but keep in mind that most silhouettes are done in black.
You can also use 3-D objects. For example, if you create a silhouette of a tree, you can have leaves falling to the ground simply by purchasing silk leaves and gluing them in place. Remember if you're using 3-D designs as part of your silhouette in a small child's room to make sure they won't fit into little mouths or put them high enough so the child can't reach the design.
Happy Decorating!
