Eating a Rainbow Part III

bananaTo continue on our Rainbow journey, this month I will be writing about eating the color YELLOW.

I have picked a power packed yellow food that even the monkeys know is full of wonderful nutrition to make you strong and full of energy…The Banana.

There is a good reason why the monkeys love this unique fruit. Bananas are an excellent source of instant energy and helps to build strong muscles...You don't see too many weakling monkeys!

Bananas contain 3 types of natural sugar…Sucrose, Fructose, and Glucose as well as a significant amount of fiber. It has more digestible carbohydrates than all other fruit making it a great snack when you are feeling low on energy. And remember…Carbohydrates are not bad! Your body needs carbohydrates for energy and for fuel for the brain. Your body burns carbohydrate energy more easily than from either protein or fat calories. It is a wonderful snack for your little students as it helps their brains stay sharp in school and helps them maintain energy throughout the day. Bananas are also a wonderful performance enhancing food for athletes for multiple reasons. Just 2 bananas provide enough energy for an intense 90 minute workout as well as other necessary nutrients.

One of the most important nutrients in the banana is the mineral, Potassium. Potassium has many benefits including reducing the risk of hypertension and stroke. Potassium aids in protein synthesis thereby helping the body to build muscle and also helps in muscle contraction by stimulating nerve impulse. If you have trouble with your muscles cramping when you exercise, try eating a banana to prevent the cramping.

Bananas also contain tryptophan which is converted into serotonin in your body which is a mood enhancer. Feeling a little blue? Eat a banana for a nice little pick me up.

Bananas can help relieve the symptoms of PMS due to its B6 content and also helps alleviate morning sickness by stabilizing blood sugar between meals as well as giving you and your baby necessary vitamins and minerals.

Bananas are very soothing to a sick little tummy. Try eating a little bit of mashed bananas with milk and honey for an instant hangover cure. They can also help relieve symptoms of nicotine withdrawal.

So for a healthy, convenient, and power-packed snack…grab a banana…the monkeys know!

Next month we will continue on our Rainbow journey with the color GREEN!
