DIG UP MY GOLD, BUT I WON'T SAY WHERE IT'S BURIED is the biography of Dr. Arthur Birkby, a former professor of music at a variety of well known colleges and universities. This is the second book Dr. Birkby has penned, the first one having been a book on music theory entitled READY REFERENCE HARMONY HANDBOOK.
DIG UP MY GOLD, BUT I WON'T SAY WHERE IT'S BURIED is a short biography that sketches the early life - childhood, formative and teenage years - of a World War II veteran who also survived the Great Depression. As such, he is able to give many accounts first-hand that at the time were serious, but in retrospect are truly funny. While many of the anecdotes he tells are humorous, some are very serious, and others are downright sad. With a knack for story-telling, he showcases his family who is close-knit through bonds of blood and loyalty, but who at times did not look out for one another the way he wishes they had.
Dr. Birkby's book is a collection of brief vignettes that will permit the readers first hand glimpses into the realities of American life before political correctness became the norm. Parents will see how their actions - or lack thereof - are likely to be viewed from the perspective of their children, and even how they will affect their children's perceptions when these kids are grown up. The pettiness of adults, the harsh realities of broken promises, and the mental, emotional, and physical horrors of the war are showcased against a backdrop of love that covers a multitude of sins, a blossoming faith in God, and a life-long love affair with music that permeated everything Dr. Birkby put his hands to. A truly wonderful book for readers of any age. Do your self a favor and pick up a copy - this is a page-turner you will read time and again!
