Parenting by the Book

by Sylvia Cochran

Today's featured writer is Karol Ladd. Her new book (ISBN 084990711X) is entitled "A POSITIVE PLAN FOR CREATING MORE FUN, LESS WHINING." Published in July 2006, this book is a lifesaver for anyone who has ever held on to her or his parental temper with the last shred of dignity. After all, how often do we encounter whining children? Every single day!

While this is a wonderful book to read prior to the vacation season, it is apropos for any time when parents and children have the opportunity to interact in close quarters. During the school year we can sometimes give in to the illusion that our kids are doing "ok" and that they have finally overcome their whining, arguing, and other less than desirable qualities in favor of sterner discipline and compliance.

While this may be the case in a few rare occasions, the reality is simply this: at school children will act differently than at home, and if the atmosphere at home is one that provokes the child to whining, boredom, and exasperation, she or he will go right back to these traits of character when the next vacation from school occurs. As a parent, this might come as a shock to you, but Ms. Ladd is actually convinced that in order to combat whining and boredom, we -as parents- must become more fun!

You may now wonder just how to achieve this. After all you might think: you are holding down a job, keeping the house clean, attempting to keep your social life in balance, and now you also need to think up some kinds of entertainment for your child? Relax! What seems like a daunting task has actually been made a simple, fun-filled process by Karol Ladd.

In a few simple steps, she is able to teach weary parents how to become fun parents! No, you do not need to invest hundreds of dollars in gadgets and games. The odds are good that you already have everything around the house that you will need for this easy task! Furthermore, she offers season specific decorating tips that will set the mood for the family and keep things upbeat and festive. The book is filled with boredom busters for every occasion, and never again will your child be uttering the words "I'm bored" as she begins to subtly misbehave.

Ms. Ladd reveals the best places to visit during rainy and stormy days, and the most fun things to do when the weather is beautiful and sunny. Short family devotionals are part and parcel of this book and will help you and your child to actually work together as you embark on the journey to a happy, contented home!

This book is the quintessential "must-have" for anyone with children. Please do not feel that this book will only help you if you are a Christian. As a matter of fact, even though it contains family devotionals that are God based, you will be able to enjoy them and apply all of the book's suggestion if you do not share this faith, or perhaps have no faith at all. The book is that good!
