Parenting by the Book

by Sylvia Cochran

Today's featured book is written by Gary Chapman and Ross Campbell, M.D.. The book (ISBN 1-881273-65-2) is entitled The Five Love Languages of Children icon

You might be familiar with the other "Five Love Languages" books that Gary Chapman has pioneered. In his works he concisely helps people to understand how to show love to one another so that the recipient of the loving attention does indeed feel loved. Far too often we attempt to show love to our children in ways that would make us feel loved. In the early years of life this makes sense, since the child's personality is still budding but has yet to completely bloom. Yet as the child grows older and more mature, distinct character traits are breaking through, and so does the need to be loved according to her or his own merits, and not in ways that may be appreciated but do not necessarily spell love and affection for the child.

The book clearly illustrates how one demonstration of love will be perceived as being the best way of love by one child, while another child may feel liked but not necessarily loved if the same mode of love is demonstrated to her or him. In the book the authors speak of the five languages being "physical touch," "words of affirmation," "quality time," "gifts," and "acts of service."

With the holidays behind us you might feel that your little one is definitely the gift person, but you could be mistaken. After all, most every child enjoys receiving gifts for the holidays! You might be surprised to find out that what your child values most is your consistent and constant affirmation of her or him!

This book is a wonderful eye opener for any parent who has ever wondered what makes their child "tick" and how they can really show love in such a way that a child feels loved, appreciated, and sincerely valued. A must read, no matter how old your child is, this timeless classic should be considered required reading!
