Parenting by the Book

by Sylvia Cochran

Today's featured book is written by two individuals who have been around the block once or twice: Robert Lewis and William Hendricks. The book (ISBN 0891096418) is entitled Rocking the Roles: Building a Win-Win Marriage Rocking the Roles: Building a Win-Win Marriage.

This book is the quintessential instruction guide on how to have a marriage that will survive the first year when the initial battle lines are drawn and the seventh year, when its mettle will be tested as familiarity and the long haul set in. Perhaps instead of the copious spice racks and matching towels, it is this book that should be present at every wedding shower.

As a parent - or perhaps future parent if you are not yet married - you will want to consider how to fulfill your children's need for gender specific role models. Sure, society will tell you that the role-less marriage is not only acceptable but actually an achievable status that shows that you, too, have arrived in the 21st century, but the realities sadly lack this euphoric statement's veracity. Gender does determine which role you will fulfill in a marriage setting, and for the person who strives to have a marriage that will last, it is imperative to recognize that there is nothing medieval about this division of labor.

The authors of this book uncover a host of myths which are propagated by daytime television, self help shows, and of course those who consider themselves to be either hopelessly mired in feminist rhetoric or caught up in '50s style machismo. Interestingly, Robert Lewis and William Hendricks showcase that neither option is a good one, and that a lasting marriage cannot survive on modern ideals that have little foundation in the ways men and women really interact, nor can it flourish in a contrived and forced old-time patriarch model. Instead, this book teaches how to build your marital relationship from the ground up. Furthermore, it gently prepares you for the shifting of the roles that will undoubtedly occur when children bless your marriage.

If in your entire married life you only purchase one book, let it be "Rocking the Roles: Building a Win-Win Marriage" so that your relationship will be off to a good start!
