Parenting by the Book

by Sylvia Cochran

Today's featured writer is Ross Campbell, M.D. His new book (ISBN 0849945429) is entitled How to Really Parent Your Teenager: Raising Balanced Teens in an Unbalanced World

The subtitle reads "raising balanced teens in an unbalanced world. Published in March 2006, this book seeks to be a guide post to raising the stranger who suddenly seems to have taken over your child's body. You all know from cartoons and jokes just how moody a teenager can be, and this transformation may be a source of quite a few laughs, until it happens in your own home with your own child!

Parents need to come to grips with the idea that their child is growing up. Suddenly it no longer matters too much if little Peggy does not want to play dolls anymore with her; what matters more is what Tom thinks of her, and if he finds her attractive. How do you deal with a teenager who is suddenly experiencing the pangs of puppy love? How do you teach values about sexuality and morality in a world where promiscuity is all but the norm?

Dr. Campbell freely acknowledges that you will no longer be able to spank your growing child or send her to her room until she is happy. On the contrary, he warns parents to look out for teenage depression which is far more serious and entirely separate from overall moodiness or simply a bad attitude. You will learn that you are still able - and required - to discipline your teenager, but you will need to use different tools. Dr. Campbell is here to share these tools with you and to ensure that you will be well equipped to embark on this direction of your child's life.

You may now wonder just how to achieve this and keep your anxieties and also mounting temper in check. Once again, the book offers a variety of hints, tips, and tricks that will help you to stay in control of yourself and by default of the mood that pervades your home. Parenting a teen is not the time for letting parental tempers flare and frustrations color your actions and words. On the contrary! No other period of parenting has called for as much restraint and good attitude!

So go ahead and prepare yourself for this turbulent time in your child's life. Whether you are in the midst of the generational clashes, or if you still have a few year to go before your child will join the ranks of the teens, this book is a wonderful addition to your bookshelf and a great tool that will equip you to deal with the unexpected corners you will need to turn, as well as weather the expected storms that you knew would be brewing. This is truly a must-read!
