By Sonya Weiss – Interior Design One of the important factors in any decorating theme is the colors that are used.

Or more specifically, how the various colors are layered. To create ambiance and flow within a room, certain color patterns should be duplicated even when decorating for holidays or special events. To create an elegant appeal within any decorating pattern, never blend more than three colors.

For example, let’s say that you prefer a more primitive decorating style mixed with traditional and you wanted a holiday showpiece to reflect that primitive appeal using materials found in nature.
Both pinecones and greenery such as tree boughs or holly leaves are primitive as well as traditional and are readily available. You would want to choose any additional decorations (such as candles) in a copper gold color rather than a brighter or lighter gold because the copper color would complement both the brown in the pinecone and the green in the pine or holly.
Taking just those three colors, you can create a Christmas decorating suitable for either a fireplace mantel or a coffee table display.
In the center of the area to be decorated, place a grouping of pinecones. Surround them front and back and along with sides with the greenery. For the greenery, you can also use rounded eucalyptus leaves if you prefer a more muted green-plus they give off a delightful scent. Using a three point triangle configuration around the center pinecones, place the candles. For more holiday sparkle, add copper colored Christmas balls.

Happy Decorating!
