thanksgivng reflectionsPeople often say something happens at this time of the year, and as days go by more quickly. However, for some people, this can be an excruciatingly slow time. Whether the holidays are looked upon with anticipation or dread, it is certainly a time of reflection. Thanksgiving can be a favorite holiday because it is an opportunity to slow down, for just a moment, and appreciate all people and things in one’s life, that too often, we take for granted. Unlike Christmas, it is not associated with the materialism that begins the following day and continues into the new year.

In retirement, there can be a tendency to reflect on times and traditions that have gone before, while losing focus on the now, or creating new traditions. Memories can be happy or sad, but at this time of life, there is usually a transition. People that have celebrated holidays in the past, may no longer be with us.  The Hallmark Christmas that is portrayed on T.V. is not the reality for many older people. The celebrations that we want so desperately to be happy occasions, often aren’t, and we spend our time reflecting on that, rather than where we are now in life.

While many try to spend time with family and friends, there are those who may be in new surroundings, away from loved ones. With so many people retiring and moving to different parts of the country , or having to downsize and move out of their homes due to ill health or economic necessity, it is not possible for many of us to observe holiday traditions as we did in the past.

Traditions are great, but it is never too late to start a new way of life that can last beyond the holidays.
