Container Gardening
by Ann Safford

Spring has finally arrived! At least according to the calendar, even though some of us northerners aren't feeling the warmth yet.

It's time to think about your healthy lifestyle this year and filling your body up with fresh fruits and vegetables.

We've all felt it, at the grocery store, as rising prices are taking a huge bite out of our wallets. Have you considered growing your own vegetables? For a country dweller with plenty of space, the sky is the limit! But did you know you could still enjoy gardening and fresh produce in the city?

Container gardening is the new "thing." You don't need a lot of space, just a small patio or deck to set your containers on. Plants breathe in carbon dioxide and replace it with oxygen, so not only to you get to enjoy fresh food, but you can also clean the air in your immediate area.

Start with some large containers and an idea on what you want to grow. Tomatoes are popular, and don't take up much space. Each plant produces several tomatoes for you to enjoy.

Pole beans, cucumbers and peas are another common plant. You can pick up a small, inexpensive trellis for them to climb and you'll be amazed at the abundance of vegetables you can produce.

Lettuce and cabbage can be grown in large window boxes, and you can even plan on peppers and onions!

It's amazing at the amount of vegetables that one plant can produce. Plan your space out correctly, and you can eat all summer and into the fall just on the vegetables you've grown in "your space."

Fruits and vegetables are the healthiest things for your body next to water. Unfortunately they are also some of the most expensive purchases in your grocery budget.

Why not choose a healthier lifestyle while taking the budget crunch out of your pocketbook? It's a win-win situation and pretty soon you can enjoy the "fruits" of your labor!
