New President -- New Garden
by Ann Safford

With a new president in office, and 2009 officially well under way, we are prompted to believe in change. What the future has in store, no one is ever certain. What we can guarantee though, is our commitment to the earth and keeping it a welcoming place for future generations to come.

Living green, or earth friendly, is easy and can be very economical; especially in times of economic change such as we have now. February is here, so if you haven't already started those tomato seeds- now is the time!

Gardens are back to popularity with this crisis so get your seeds early and start planting what you can indoors. Many seed retailers are already sold out of common vegetable seeds. While you might have to wait until harvest, the wait will be well worth your while as you taste the freshness from your very own garden. Think of the "greenness" of it all, not just the color of your leaves on your vegetables, but the landfills will be less cluttered with the lack of plastic packaging that doesn't decompose.

Gardening will save you bundles of money in the supermarket as well. When you consider the cost of produce, it'll be an easy choice for you. You have an initial upfront cost for seeds, and the rest is just your time. You don't need to have acres of land to provide for your family either, doing an internet search for "container gardening" will yield thousands of results.

If you really want to go "au-natural," buy heirloom seeds. After harvest, you can use the seeds for next years crop! Think of the savings and the self-sufficiency you can have!

While 2009 brings promises of hope; one can never predict the future. Keep your commitment to stay earth friendly. It's the smartest choice, for you, your family, your health and the earth. (Not to mention the pocketbook!)
