Saving On Heating Bills is Green!

Many of us have already turned on the heat as the days have gotten considerably chillier. It's still possible to "think green" even though you might look out your window and only see white!

With the ever increasing oil and gas rates, and the economy arguably in a recession, it's ever important to save the funds you have while still keep an earth friendly view.

Holidays are approaching, which chances are, mean lots of cooking time. Put your oven to work for more than just the Thanksgiving turkey but turning down the thermostat. It'll save you fuel. Gather your family into the kitchen to enjoy the warmth of the stove and oven, and even put them to work by helping to peel potatoes!

Pick the warmest room in the house for an "overnight sleep-out." You can lower your thermostat a few degrees overnight and have a camping party in the warmest room. Bring sleeping bags and popcorn, pop in a movie and enjoy the warmth together!

Use the sun to help warm your home during the day but opening up the curtains and drapes on the warmest side of the house. Remember to turn down the heat and let the sunshine shine in. Spend your time in the rooms with the most light by reading a book or catching up on your sewing! The extra Vitamin D in the sunlight can also help brighten your mood!

Even for those of us that aren't blessed with programmable thermostats can keep a watchful eye on our fuel usage this winter. Set your temperature up a few degrees when the family is at home, and turn it down at night when you're snuggled under the covers. Upon waking, turn it up again…. it's only painful until the heat kicks in which isn't too long. Wear your warm pajamas and even snuggle back under the blankets until the warmth fills your home. Turn your heat down again upon leaving for work, or getting the kids off to school. An extra sweatshirt or sweater can go a long way!
