No more staying up late and sleeping in. Time for a routine of early to bed and early to rise. Experts agree that adequate sleep is one of the main things needed for a child to succeed at school. Children heading off to kindergarten will have to adjust to a rigid activity schedule, and a new caregiver – teacher. Often children will encounter academic competition for the first time. Whether heading off to high school or kindergarten new experiences bring stress and anxiety just like new experiences affect adults. Here are some tips to help you children cope.
- Try getting up earlier a couple of days before the new school year begins
- Talk about what to expect at school , visit the school ahead of time
- Reading books about school, especially when kids are in transition between elementary and junior high or junior high to high school. Reading about how other kids solved problems, made friends, etc., helps them figure out how to handle new situations
- Get the kids involved in preparing to go back to school, clothes, supplies, practice walking to school.
- Parents who are struggling with emotions about children going off to kindergarten need to " put on a happy face" when sending kids off school, so that it is positive experiencefor the children
- Avoid yelling if your child resists getting up in the morning, getting dressed etc. (expect occasion problems)
- Take child to school first few days if possible
- Make time to talk about school happenings
- Pack lunch with favorite food
- Pack backpack the night before especially on gym day
