Summer All-Stars
By Kelly S. Croslis
The highlight of any ball player's career is the opportunity to play in an All-star game. No matter the sport, earning a spot on the starting roster is a sign they have made an impression on those who watch the game and cast the votes.
For pro players, it is the fans that vote them in, so making the team can often be a combination of talent and popularity. At the amateur or even youth level, it is based on ability and coach's choice, but brings with it the same amount of confidence in their ability to play the game.
July is the month for summer All-star games; baseball and soccer take turns putting their best players on the field. Kicking off the mid summer games Major League Baseball steps up to the plate with the much anticipated home-run derby. In recent years the derby has become almost as anticipated as the All-Star game itself, giving bragging rights to the top hitter for the next year. The following day, with the playing of the All-Star game itself, the analysis continues, on which division won the year before, who has won the most games and what it means for the team in the future.
As the month winds down major league soccer takes to the field in their version of the All-Star game. While the idea of the game is the same and fans are able to vote for their favorite players, the game itself, however, is not laid among the east and west, but against international teams. The idea is to bring the best of Major League Soccer together to prove itself against teams from around the world. In the same way, the international teams see the game as a chance to prepare for their upcoming seasons. In four previous years of playing international opponents, Major League Soccer All-Star team has not lost.
In the end making the All-Star team is to be seen as being one of the best of the best, and to know the years of practice a hard work paid off.
Here's to all our all-stars - no matter what sport you play.
