Staying In School Or Going Pro by Kelly S. Croslis
College is that time of learning about yourself and what you want to do when you 'grow up,' sometimes however, those plans change and the direction is more uncertain.
Sports today is an important part of many kids' lives, they start young and are pushed more and more to improve their skills and prepare for what could be possible. With these opportunities their dreams are almost guaranteed, in their mind. But when it comes right down to it, the decision is not always that easy.
College students are now faced with the idea that they can take their education more seriously, continuing their education and graduating, or give it all up for a chance with a Pro team. There have even been high school seniors given this opportunity, but how do they decide? What helps them to make the choice, what are the benefits, the draw backs, the questions in such plans?
Football players especially are approached by scouts to forgo their final year and put all they have into the game.
Some decide to make the 'leap' so to speak, because they feel they are ready for the next level, and anticipate being picked on the first day of the draft. They understand that they may be a 2nd or 3rd string back-up, but it seems minor against the idea that they will be a pro ball player.
Though the temptation is great, advisors tell them to stay and finish the degree - even pro players themselves advise these young college students to finish college, give it another year then enter the draft. The extra year will not only give them a degree and career to fall back on; it also offers them the extra experience that could be vital when joining a pro team. I'm not sure it falls on deaf ears, but the call to 'stardom' seems to be greater.
There is no right or wrong answer; each person will have to decide for themselves, but in looking at the big picture - finishing school, not only for a degree, but for more experience is worth much more in the end.
