The Obscure Among The "IN" Sports by Kelly S. Croslis
Over the last few weeks baseball has once again taken the nation captive as the race begins for the coveted pennant and World Series appearance. Turn the channel, however, and coming in just below the radar are two championships series being played out - without much fanfare and little notice. Some credit should be given to college basketball, as March Madness does seem to become the forefront, and according the news reports tends to interfere with business productivity, after March though it falls to the way side and Pro-basketball struggles for the same notoriety.
Pro-basketball and Hockey are playing for their respective championships, though you may be hard pressed, if you're a fan of either sports to find the game, as the major channels often show their favoritism airing baseball on nearly every channel.
So what is a basketball and hockey fan to do? A computer is more than helpful, with numerous sports sites available, team sites and news sites finding the highlights from your favorite game is simple and you can catch up on the details when you have time. Sports Illustrated can help also, focusing on sports of all kinds and levels.
I have often wondered why some sports tend to fade into the background, while others take the spotlight. Basketball and Hockey, along with sports such as NASCAR and Soccer have a select group of fans, those who are truly passionate about the game - but seem to stay within their own circle, unlike baseball and football, two sports that take over the airwaves year round.
I am not sure there is a way to change what the majority of sports fans see as important and as for newscasts to keep their ratings up they will cater to what the majority wants to see - it's about the numbers and rating.
So, next time you are searching for your favorite baseball team on the TV, stop by and check out a new sport, you may find they are just as exciting and addicting.
