Soccer Moms
by Kelly S. Croslis

soccer momThe month of May brings to the forefront our mom's. She is a cook, doctor, therapist, chauffer and even an ATM. She goes out of her way to provide for her family, and in process manages to have a little fun.

The term soccer mom is thought to have been begun by a woman running for city council in Denver, Colorado. She used the term to explain her credentials. While it may have seemed out of the ordinary, she was being honest. Mom's are more often then not, a cook, doctor, therapist, chauffer, teacher and even an ATM. Moms are more qualified for positions than most people, because they are not schooled in only one area.

In 1996, Bill Clinton, used the "Soccer Moms" as a way to reach a wider group of voters. It was believed, by both parties, that the "soccer mom," is easily persuaded. It is assumed that her or his (in the case of a Soccer Dad) are more concerned with education, health care and tax and the welfare of their families. Using this to their advantage, candidates focus their efforts to reach them, hoping they will bring the votes needed.

While some may use the caring spirit of these parents for their own good, in reality, they are taking care of their families. Providing for their children by offering them different opportunities, making sure they are active and healthy. Some may criticize having numerous drinks and snacks in the car as too much, but how can you care too much?

We hear almost everyday on the news about our children not getting enough exercise, not eating right, or coming home to an empty house after school. In the same breath, parents are criticized for paying too much attention to their children, offering them opportunities they may have never had.

In the end what matters is we honor the person who pulls it all together, the anchor in the storm, the one who is able to make the clouds disappear and injuries seem less painful. So, whether you call her a soccer mom, a stay-at-home-mom, a working mom, or simply mom - she plays the same roll, has the same concerns for her family and world, and would have it no other way.

So, this May and each day after - thank your mom and all the moms for bringing the world to its feet and taking notice to the concerns we all have.
